Challenging but Productive Spring Semester
5/1/2008

Dear Brothers,

The month of April has brought us to the end of a challenging but productive semester. As we prepare for final exams, we are also preparing for a move into our new house and recruiting the best associate member class yet. On April 4th, the chapter began our Pre-Initiation Events for our spring associates. Our High Kappa Jake Burchfield did a commendable job of preparing the six young men and High Phi Alex Cohn ran a successful Ritual Weekend. On April 8th, we initiated Hunter Bentley, AJ Buckner, Freeman Blakney, Brad Cothran, Robert Buddo, and John Ethridge. These guys did a great job of pushing themselves to become ready for initiation and the men of Alpha Phi are proud to welcome them into our brotherhood.

This month alone, the chapter rose over $1500 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, along with another $5000 collected with Alpha Delta Pi sorority during a brunch before the University’s spring football game to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. The chapter heads into the summer ready to make a positive impact for next fall. Both high Deltas have been challenged by High Tau Joel Reaves, our House Corporation, and myself to exceed expectations in recruitment. Our goal is to have forty quality new members initiated by the end of the next socialistic year. This is an attainable goal and will be essential to continue the growth and improvement of the Alpha-Phi Zeta here on campus. Additionally, many brothers received honors during April. Six brothers were selected for Order of Omega Greek Honor Society along with three for Order of Alpha Freshmen Honor Society. During the Order of Omega Banquet High Pi Roy Gregg, Alpha-Phi 881 was recognized as the University of Alabama Greek Advisor of the year. The past nine months have been very challenging without our house, but I am proud of the improvement we have made. Now we must work to ensure a productive summer recruitment and fall semester.

In Z.A.X.,

Jess Mann

Newly Elected High Alpha
1/14/2008

Dear Brothers,

My name is Jess Mann and I am writing you as the newly elected High Alpha at Alpha Phi Zeta. I am from Guntersville, Alabama and was initiated in the fall of 2005. Since then I have had to opportunity to serve as both High Delta and High Epsilon. I am very proud of how our chapter has grown over the last three years and can confidently say we are among the elite fraternities on campus. Yet, as president my vision is to improve our chapter in every area and become the best organization at the University of Alabama. Each officer on our new High Zeta is a leader in the house and it excites me to know what we can accomplish. I am challenging our High Deltas to recruit ten associates for the spring semester and over forty for next fall in order to build a 100 man house at Alpha Phi for the first time in decades. Scholarship has steadily improved over the last few years, but I am holding our brothers to a standard that will make us a leader in academics by next fall. Since my association Lambda Chi Alpha has become well known in the Tuscaloosa area for our outstanding community service and charity. Along with the High Theta, I want to continue our reputation and become a model for other houses. Lastly, I cannot express how eager every brother is to move into our new chapter house next fall. Lambda Chi Alpha will truly have the nicest facilities on campus and I would like to speak for all the undergraduates in thanking the alumni who have helped make this a reality.
I am excited about the accomplishments we have made, but remain determined to work toward our goal of being the best chapter on campus when we move into our new home next fall.

Fraternally yours in Zeta Alpha Chi,

Jess Mann ΑΦ1378

Greetings from the Alpha Phi Zeta!

My name is Forrest Bailey and I am serving as our president. We had an incredible Spring Semester and an even better summer, and I cannot wait for this coming fall.

This spring we were honored to host Lynn Chipperfield, Grand High Pi, who flew down to present one of our Spring Initiates, Taylor George, with the distinction of being the 250,000th Lambda Chi Alpha Initiate. This incredible honor gives our house a special piece of our International Fraternity’s History. Taylor also has the distinction of being Alpha Phi 1400. We are all excited to see our house reach and exceed this mark.

This fall we are returning with over 60 active members, and we already have 25 future associates ready for the fall- with more still being recruited. Our recent growth could not have been possible without all of our alumni involvement. We have been particularly fortunate this summer to have received scores of rush recommendations from many alumni. This foundation of alumni support has been vital throughout this summer’s rush. I am confident that with continued support, we will continue to grow.

In July we had four brothers, including myself, travel to Orlando, Florida for our General Assembly. One of our juniors, Kyle Shirley represented us as a member of the elite Student Advisory Committee, and Jay Hedgspeth represented us as the Captain of the International Ritual Team. Due to the hard work of these brothers and the status of our chapter, we were honored with several awards at the Assembly. Specifically our chapter was recognized with the award for outstanding recruitment and the award for outstanding undergraduate involvement. I am excited to see our chapter getting some much needed recognition from our International Headquarters.

Let me encourage all of you to make it a point to come by and visit the house the next time you get an opportunity, and please feel free to contact me. I can be reached on my home line in Room 5 of the Chapter House by calling 205.348.4284 or my cell at 256.504.3723. Please forward any email comments to my address, baile009@bama.ua.edu. I am looking forward to another outstanding semester.
